What Is That on My Lettuce?
Random Acts of Blindness

Standing in line deciphering what vegetables I was going to put on my salad. I could see enough at the time to distinguish between colors to know that the large rectangular bin full of green stuff was lettuce.
A circle container next to it with red contents must be the tomatoes. Once I was satisfied with my colorful selection of veggies I was off to the dressing selection. This is a bit trickier as several different dressing have the same color. I decided to take my chances and attempt to get ranch. There were some containers filled with white so I went for it. I felt that the odds were in my favor.
Being proud of my salad making abilities, I returned to my table to enjoy my colorful salad. I sat down and quickly reached for my utensils. I was very eager to have my beautiful arrangement.
However, I hear my husband hesitantly ask, “Moe did you want cottage cheese on your salad?” I abruptly put my utensils down and felt defeated. However, I really did find it amusing. I was also very happy my husband spoke up because I am not a fan of cottage cheese. I may have gotten upset and thought the restaurant was serving curdled ranch.
The waitress came by and grabbed my colorful collection and stared at it with bemusement. There were several individuals hovering around the salad bar while I was creating my masterpiece. I wonder if they had a similar expression on their face.
This happened to me several years ago as my family traveled to DC. It was the moment when I realized that I had lost some of my remaining sight. I often wondered why the ranch had a spoon in it instead of a ladle.
