Jeff Thompson:
Welcome to Blind Abilities. I’m Jeff Thompson. In this feature of iPhone 101 we’re going to show you some new features from the Seeing AI app. We’ve done quite a few podcasts on the Seeing AI app, and if you check the show notes you can go check them all out. Even the introductory where we talked to the developers about coming out with this Swiss Army blade knife of an app for the visually impaired from Microsoft. This demo was previously released on That Blind Tech Show, and we’ve been getting quite a few requests through email and messages to break it on out of there and put it into the iPhone 101 series. So Billy, thank you for your email and this demonstration of the Seeing AI latest updates goes out to you from the team at Blind Abilities. Thank you, Billy.
Speaker 2:
Was that supposed to be Casey Cason?
Jeff Thompson:
Yeah, did you like it?
Speaker 2:
Well, you might not want to quit your day job. I’m just saying.
Jeff Thompson:

Jeff Thompson:
All right, check this out. From Seeing AI. Now you can explore photos, identify objects that are in the photo and their location just by sliding your finger across the screen. But that’s not all. Now you can adjust your channels, you can arrange them any way you want to now. Just open up your Seeing AI app. Open Seeing AI.
Speaker 3:
Seeing AI menu button.
Jeff Thompson:
And a single finger double tap to get into the menu.
Speaker 3:
Close button.
Jeff Thompson:
And let’s go down to…
Speaker 3:
Settings button.
Jeff Thompson:
Here we are, single finger, double tap.
Speaker 3:
Settings.
Jeff Thompson:
And let’s go down to…
Speaker 3:
Reorder channels.
Jeff Thompson:
There we go. Single finger, double tap and we’re in.
Speaker 3:
Reorder channels.
Jeff Thompson:
All right, this is a list of channels. It’ll start at the top and go to the bottom. And then in this list of channels, they’re on the left, and on the right is your option to be able to move the channel wherever you prefer. So I’m going to go down this list and then I’ll move over to the right and give you a demonstration of moving one of the channels. So let’s see.
Speaker 3:
Selected short text.
Jeff Thompson:
Now with a single finger swipe left to right.
Speaker 3:
Reorder short text.
Jeff Thompson:
With a single finger, double tap and hold. So on the second tab, I leave my finger on the screen. Now if I slide it down…
Speaker 3:
Move below document, move below scene.
Jeff Thompson:
Or I can start moving my finger up.
Speaker 3:
Move above scene. Move above document.
Jeff Thompson:
Let go. There it is. So I’m going to slide my finger from the top to the bottom across the different channels.
Speaker 3:
Selected, short text. Selected, document. Selected, scene. Selected, product. Selected, currency.
Jeff Thompson:
So that’s move currency. I’m going to swipe to the right single finger.
Speaker 3:
Reorder currency.
Jeff Thompson:
A double tap and hold.
Speaker 3:
Move below person. Move below light. Move below color.
Jeff Thompson:
That’s good. Now, I’m going to swipe to the left.
Speaker 3:
Selected, currency.
Jeff Thompson:
Swipe to the right twice.
Speaker 3:
Selected, handwriting.
Jeff Thompson:
Okay.
Speaker 3:
Selected, currency. Selected, color.
Jeff Thompson:
All right, so that’s how you can move your channels to how you prefer to have them set up. So remember, when you come to one of the channels in this list, when you swipe left to right and land on reorder, you can double tap and hold anywhere on the screen as long as you just heard it’s on the reorder. So double tap and hold and slide it.
Speaker 3:
Move below light. Move above light.
Jeff Thompson:
There you go. You don’t have to be on that button specifically, visually or anything. Once you have it highlighted, you can just do a single finger, double tap anywhere and start moving your finger up or down on the screen. Release when you want to drop it, and then go verify.
Speaker 3:
Back, back, close, menu, short text.
Jeff Thompson:
With a single finger flicking up. I’ll move to the right.
Speaker 3:
Document.
Jeff Thompson:
And flicking up again.
Speaker 3:
Scene preview.
Jeff Thompson:
Again.
Speaker 3:
Product.
Jeff Thompson:
And so on.
Speaker 3:
Person, light, color preview, currency, handwriting preview.
Jeff Thompson:
There you go. And buy a single finger, flicking down.
Speaker 3:
Currency.
Jeff Thompson:
You go back to the left.
Speaker 3:
Color preview, light, person, product.
Jeff Thompson:
So let’s go to scene preview and check out what’s new.
Speaker 3:
Scene preview.
Jeff Thompson:
Single finger, double tap.
Speaker 3:
Scene preview, adjustable.
Jeff Thompson:
So I’m just going to hold this up with a camera facing away from me and touch right in the middle of the screen.
Speaker 3:
Take picture.
Jeff Thompson:
Single finger, double tap.
Speaker 3:
Take picture, processing. A room filled with furniture and vase of flowers on the table.
Jeff Thompson:
All right, I’m going to single fingers swipe to the right.
Speaker 3:
Save photo.
Jeff Thompson:
Keep swiping.
Speaker 3:
Share. Explore photo.
Jeff Thompson:
Okay. I’m going to explore the photo because I want to get this centered. And it’s what’s really neat is I’ll be able to test to see if it’s centered up and down or left and right.
Speaker 3:
Explore. Processing. One item detected. Move your finger over the screen to explore.
Jeff Thompson:
Okay, I’m going to start right dead center from left to right.
Speaker 3:
Plant.
Jeff Thompson:
Okay. I was able to go from left to right and I got music on the left side and the right side, so the plant is in the middle. Now try it from the top dead center, and slide from top to bottom.
Speaker 3:
Plant.
Jeff Thompson:
There we go. That’s one way of using it. Now, if I single finger left to right.
Speaker 3:
High text blocks.
Jeff Thompson:
High text blocks. Sometimes there might be text, like someone sitting there reading a newspaper. You don’t want to read the news. Well, you might want to read the newspaper, but if there’s too much text in the scene and you just want to figure out the objects, then you can shut that off by double tapping.
Speaker 3:
Hiding text blocks. One item detected.
Jeff Thompson:
So I still have the one item, which is…
Speaker 3:
Plant.
Jeff Thompson:
There we go. And to get out of this, just swipe to the right or left.
Speaker 3:
Quick help button. Show text blocks. Back.
Jeff Thompson:
There you go.
Speaker 3:
Close.
Jeff Thompson:
And…
Speaker 3:
A room filled with furniture and vase of flowers on the table.
Jeff Thompson:
You can also say this.
Speaker 3:
Save photo button.
Jeff Thompson:
Or…
Speaker 3:
Share button.
[Music] [Transition noise] -When we share
-What we see
-Through each other’s eyes…
[Multiple voices overlapping, in unison, to form a single sentence]
…We can then begin to bridge the gap between the limited expectations, and the realities of Blind Abilities.
