In this episode, Transition Coordinator Shane DeSantis and Peer Ambassadors Ava and Preston share upcoming events, including visits to the Minnesota State Academy for the Blind summer program, a volunteer evening with Every Meal, presentations at the ECC summer camp, an accessible camping adventure with Wilderness Inquiry, a canoe trip on the Mississippi River, and a fall technology workshop focused on college and career success. Along the way, they explain how these activities encourage independence, teamwork, leadership, and community involvement while creating meaningful connections with other students who share similar experiences. They also invite students to help shape future activities by sharing their ideas and interests, making this episode both an update on upcoming events and an invitation to become part of Minnesota’s growing blind and low vision community.

Links of interests:

The Spectacle Newsletter

Youth Services at SSB

To find out more about the services provided at State Services for the Blind, and what they can do for you, contact Shane DeSantis at shane.desantis@state.mn.us or call Shane at 651-385-5205.

Full Transcript:

{Music}

Ava: It felt really good to be able to have that accomplishment and feel successful in something that maybe we hadn’t previously thought that we’d be able to do or be able to do so easily. Hope you enjoy.

Shane: Great to be back in the studio with blind abilities. My name is Shane DeSantis, the transition coordinator at State services for the blind. And with me, I’ve got our peer ambassadors, Ava and Preston. Hey, guys.

Ava: Hi, I’m Ava.

Preston: Hi. I’m Preston. Nice to be back.

Shane: Cool. Well, we were post 4th of July, so I hope everyone had a great fourth this year. And we still have some things going on this summer and excited to chat a little bit about them today. Next thing that we have on the calendar that we’re planning to attend would be the summer program at the State Academy for the blind. Preston, do you want to just briefly about that?

Preston: Yeah. So kind of our vision, because we had a day last year where SBE came down and informed about services, and we’re planning to have that happen again, either with Shane or Sheila or someone coming down. But we’re also going to incorporate Ava and I as peer ambassadors. And one of the things we were thinking was an activity morning. And maybe if we don’t have the whole time, like one activity or two activities to basically kind of familiarize that group of high school students, we’d be working in the high school, they call it independence 101. So we’d be working with that group kind of also a transition group, talking about a variety of things similar to what we did at STP, kind of just talking about independent living and transitioning into college and the workforce and all of those kinds of things. And yeah, that’ll be just in a couple of weeks.

Shane: So students, if you’re going to be at this, can we from the blind summer school, we look forward to seeing you there after that, man, it’s going to take us into August. Ava, will you kick things off and share information about the volunteer night?

Ava: Yeah, of course. On August 5th, I believe is our tentative date right now. We are going to be doing a volunteer opportunity at a place called Every Meal. It is in Roseville, and it is a nonprofit organization that strives to bring healthy meals to people who are local. So like, I know a lot of you guys have probably done feed my starving children through camps and stuff. And it’s kind of similar to that, except we’re packing meals for local students, people within our own school districts, within our own communities. I’ve done it before and it’s incredibly rewarding. It’s really awesome because it’s very accessible. The people there are very aware of accessibility needs, and I think it’s a great starting opportunity for our organization to kind of get into like some volunteer experiences because as a blind person, we know that being helpful and accessible in a community that isn’t always providing us with opportunities to help is really amazing. And getting to do something like this is extremely rewarding, and it’s great for building success in the future. And it’s a great experience because we’re able to do some things that we didn’t really do very much. We might not really do a lot with packing food or with doing volunteer opportunities in the community. And since this is going to be a good starting place, we’re hoping to do some more of that in the future just to kind of help students get out of their comfort zones and learn some living skills, while also having the reward of helping other people. Yeah, it’s very personal and it’s a really great organization. Yeah. So look out for that on August 5th.

Shane: Anyone who is interested in joining our group and volunteering on the fifth. Like Ava said, at August 5th in Roseville, 6 p.m. until 8 p.m., we’ll have a group of anywhere between ten and maybe 20 students together. So I think we a great way to volunteer, build your resume and also be in a community with some other blind students and maybe have some fun with the activity as well. Just a quick fun fact that I learned recently that the state of Minnesota has one of, if not the highest rate of volunteerism across the states. So come help us be a part of that volunteering group, giving back to our communities, building your resume, putting your skills into action. We preached that volunteering is a great way to start your career, build some skills, get some work experience, and like I said, hopefully we’ll have some fun with it too. So we hope to see you there. If you are interested, you can get a hold of Ava Preston or myself and we will get you on that list.

Ava: Yes. And also you can look forward to some other information from us about it that will be probably sent out by Shane in the next couple of weeks about it. But yeah, it’s a great experience, very accessible. And like I said, just very rewarding.

Preston: Just adding on to that very briefly, Ava and I, yes, do plan to create a write up together just with more information about that for you guys to check interest and things like that. So yeah.

Shane: That morning we hope to give a presentation to a group of students for the expanded core curriculum group that a local district here in the Metro puts on. So Preston, you’ve done this before. So share just briefly about that ECC camp.

Preston: Yeah. So ECC 917 is a summer camp. It’s not really a precursor to STP, but it’s led by a lot of the same people and starts to focus on introductory skills that kind of go into STP. So a day at ECC looks a lot like cooking meals, washing dishes, doing laundry, things like that. It’s basically an independent living skills kind of camp. And we also go out into the community and do rec and leisure things like blind sailing and camp butterscotch, which if you don’t know what Camp Butterscotch is, it’s basically a agriculture camp, a farming camp that’s meant for blind and visually impaired students run by some local vision teachers. And we’d go out and explore that. But we also go out and explore resources that are available to us, like state services for the blind. They’ve gone every year, but this year we again, similar to STP and MSAB. Ava and I plan to incorporate our skill set and abilities into that programming time.

Shane: So looking down the calendar. Then the very next week, August 11th to August 13th will be our third now annual camping trip that SSB puts on in conjunction with a local nonprofit called Wilderness Inquiry. Like I said, this will be our third camping trip. The last two years we have camped along the Saint Croix River, and this year we’re going to be in Carver County, camping right next to a lake. So we’ll still have that opportunity to get out on the water, get in the canoes, do some swimming, hiking around the park. Other wilderness activities like building campfires, cooking over a campfire, will be making meals and outdoors. So students will be working alongside the camp organizers and SSB staff to work on the camp stove, prepare breakfast, lunch and dinner will definitely have some camping game. Maybe story times around the fire, other camping staples built into that date. So again, that’s going to be August 11th, 12th, and 13th in Carver County. If anyone is interested in that, we do have a sign-ups through our nonprofit Wilderness Inquiry. They’ve got the staff, they bring everything. They bring the tents, they bring the sleeping bags. They bring all the food, all the camping supplies. As a student, you just need to show up.

Bring a pack of clothes, toothbrush, sunscreen, swimsuit. If you want to get in the water and be present. So if you’re one that enjoys the outdoors and wants to be an outdoors alongside some other low vision and blind students, this is a great opportunity to put those outdoor skills to use and be again in a community of blind and low vision students. So again, that date is August 11th to August 13th. If you’re interested, reach out to your counselor. Reach out to me. Wilderness inquiry has a sign up and we’d love to see you there. The past couple of years have been great turnouts. We get a good group of students. They all love to participate. Roast marshmallows, bring in some of their camping staples if they’ve camped with their family before into that environment. So if you’re interested, please reach out. We’d love to see you there.

And then we also do another event with Wilderness Inquiry every year, just a day canoeing event. So this year our date is September 20th. It’s a Sunday Canoeing down the Mississippi River. Ava, you did this last year with our group. Can you just share a little bit about your experience and what students could look forward to this year?

Ava: Yeah. Oh my gosh, it was so fun. I personally really loved it. I loved being out on the water. I thought it was really cool because it’s definitely not something that like as a blind person or just as a person in general, you might think that you’re able to do until you kind of get going. But like I was saying about Every Meal, it’s very accessible. Yeah, it was like a big success last year. We had like a bunch of rain, which was really awesome because we had a little bit of resistance and it felt really good to be able to have that accomplishment and feel successful in something that maybe we hadn’t previously thought that we’d be able to do or be able to do so easily. Yeah, I thought it was a really great experience. I got to meet actually, like some new people that I’m still friends with just from that one day. Yeah, I really like Wilderness Inquiry. They’re really cool. They’ve got some really cool stuff. Yeah, it’s a really great experience. It’s very bite sized, very accomplishable. And I think that’s kind of the point. It’s really cool to be able to say that we’ve done something like that. It’s really fun.

Shane: Yeah. So again, that’s a drop off Sunday. I think we usually start around noon. We do some land based activities, some team building activities and getting to know one another. Wilderness inquiry brings in some history of the Mississippi River and does some outdoor education and then some paddling instruction, making sure everyone who is in the canoe has some basic information about canoe safety. Paddling. Paddling in a group. These canoes. Man. Ava, do you remember about how many students did we have in the canoe?

Ava: Oh gosh.

Shane: I haven’t been like eight.

Ava: I think it was eight.

Shane: Maybe ten to a canoe. So these are big, long, sturdy canoes. These are not your rocky tippy. You have to sit in the very middle and don’t move. Canoes very strong, very stable. We have two wilderness inquiry staff per canoe to lead us down the river. We drop in Brooklyn Park and then we paddle down while we’re on the river for, I think, a couple of hours we paddle down to like north Minneapolis, and then we get off at this cool nature center where there’s some cool activities at the nature center. Students could look at, check out, eat lunch, and just hang out and socialize before the day concludes. So yes, just a one day bite sized outdoor canoe on the Mississippi River activity, we can accommodate a wide group of students so anyone is encouraged to sign up and attend that. We’ll pray for some good weather this year. Although the rain was doing an interesting dynamic last summer. It would be cool if we just had a nice, calm, relaxing day on the river this year. So again, if you’re interested, you can reach out to any of the peer ambassadors. Reach out to me. Reach out to your counselor. Again, that won’t be until Sunday, September 20th. So we’ve got some time to get the word out about that, but we’ll have a flyer and registration that will go out in the upcoming weeks. And man, that brings us to October and school in session. So these are some great fun activities.

Again, getting together with other students, being in a community together. This isn’t all of our opportunities. There are others that are available, so we definitely encourage you to reach out to your counselor, reach out to myself, talk about what your plans are for the rest of the summer, what you want to engage in. I know Ava and Preston have some more ideas up their sleeve that they might put together. You might see some chill and Chat sessions come about, where students can just get together and hang out. And then going into October, we’re going to be coordinating another tools for school activity. So there’s a lot more to be said and done around planning that, but that will be a one day in person, technology focused workshop where we’ll be talking about tools and technology needed for post-secondary success and employment. So like I said, a lot more to be said and to come out about that. That won’t be until October. But man, from now, July through august we’ve got some great things going on. September we’ve got that canoe trip planned. October, we’ve got something in the books that will be coming out more with. And like I said, Ava and Preston have some other things up their sleeve that they’ll be coordinating. So we definitely encourage students to reach out, get involved, see what’s happening, what’s going on, and put yourself out there and make some friends, meet some people and learn some skills along the way.

Preston: And like Ava and I always say, part of our job is to put on activities that students are interested in or that students would really like to see happen. So if you have something that you would like to see happen through SSB, please don’t hesitate to reach out to Ava or I, and we can do our best to try to make that happen. If you have any suggestions and we can make it work, then we will try our best to do so.

Ava: Yep, second that for sure. I know Shane said that we did a lot of Chill and Chats this year, and we’re hoping to do some more next year. Do you have any ideas for activities we can do there? Or little like simulations of things you guys might need help with, or maybe just want to talk about with other blind people? That is quite literally exactly what we are here for, so please let us know if there’s anything you need help with, you want to talk about, you want to just kind of put out into a space with other blind people. I know as a visually impaired person, it’s very useful to be able to socialize and just have some time with other people in the community, especially during a transition period like this, because there are other people that are going through the same things and wondering the same things you are. And Preston and I might not have all the answers, but we will definitely try to be there and help and can for sure plan some future activities kind of based on your guy’s interests. Just please reach out to us. Let us know we are here. So yeah.

Shane: If anyone is interested in any of these activities, contact me, Ava Preston, and definitely reach out to myself. My email is shane.Desantis@state.mn.us or, you know, just give me a call or text at (651) 358-5205.

{Music}

Jeff: Be sure to check out and subscribe to the spectacle newsletter and learn about all the upcoming events and opportunities.
